O Tricolor abriu o placar logo aos três minutos de jogo com Henrique Dourado, mas, aos 39 do segundo tempo, Gerrero fez o gol que garantiria a taça. Já com o Flu com um a menos, Rodinei marcou o gol do título aos 50 minutos.
O último encontro da dupla Fla-Flu em uma final havia sido em 1995, há 22 anos, quando o Tricolor ficou com o título depois de vencer por 3 a 2, com o famoso gol de barriga marcado por Renato Gaúcho.
