A pobreza em Petrolina: desigualdade social na maior cidade do Sertão é o grande desafio de Miguel Coelho
Histórias de tristeza e pobreza , são o cotidiano de quem vive o drama do lado pobre de Petrolina, a cidade referencia da irrigação no Nordeste.

Quatro meninos passam por entre os veículos que param nos semáforos do Centro da Cidade vendendo balas, limpando para-brisas para arrecadar um dinheirinho para ajudar na renda da família. Desviam de carros e pedestres como se estivessem em uma corrida. O sinal abre e eles precisam correr para não serem atropelados pelos motoristas que, apressados, não percebem que naquelas quatro crianças, histórias de tristeza e pobreza são os cotidianos de quem vive o drama do lado pobre de Petrolina, a cidade referencia da irrigação no Nordeste.
Ali, naquele mesmo semáforo, esses garotos param e olham o prédio da rica prefeitura que movimenta por ano Um bilhão de Reais em seu caixa para manter a cidade limpa, ativa e gerando empregos. Essa alta concentração de renda em Petrolina cria a falsa impressão que a cidade que é rica, tem problemas, mas não tão grandes se comparada com outras cidades. Porém, a história não é essa.
Em Petrolina a riqueza tem um preço e acabar com desigualdade social é o maior desafio para qualquer gestor. Na base da pirâmide existe um enorme contingente de pessoas comuns que lutam para sobreviver trabalhando no município: são os marmiteiros, entregadores de comida, engraxates, mecânicos de bicicletas, manobristas, pedintes, panfleteiros, crianças vendedoras de balas, catadores de recicláveis, vendedores de panos de prato, de antenas e outras diversas ocupações
‘A gente vive como pode’
Talvez você leitor não saiba, porém, a pobreza em Petrolina está estampada nas comunidades periféricas da cidade. Basta uma pequena caminhada em alguns bairros da periferia que de cara você vai encontrar a desigualdade. Se tem pavimentação de sobra na Areia Branca, no Maria Auxiliadora, Gercino Coelho e Dom Malan, falta e falta muito na periferia de Petrolina que nem é tão distante do Centro da cidade.
Bem ali, perto do Centro da cidade e de condomínios de luxo, os bairros Henrique Leite e Vila Geovana, contemplam a beleza dos seus vizinhos ricos que mesmo sendo feito por incorporadoras, causa inveja pela infraestrutura. Os dois bairros concentram grande quantidade de pessoas em vulnerabilidade social, e o contraste fala por si.
” Aqui a gente vive como pode! Somos esquecidos e, quer saber, reclamar já reclamamos, porém, não somos ouvidos, então paramos de reclamar. Insatisfeitos sempre seremos, porém, a gente vive como pode!”, disse Esmelinda Silveira, moradora do bairro Henrique Leite.
‘Hoje não vendi nenhum pano’
Na Avenida Guararapes você também pode se deparar com algumas crianças de chinelo tentando vender balas a clientes de lojas de luxo enquanto, na frente da prefeitura, universitários pedem doações na troca de chocolates para manterem seus estudos na Capital do Sertão.

Ela tenta vender panos de prato no coração do PIB Petrolinense — custa R$ 4,50 a unidade. “Costumo vender uns 30 por dia, mas hoje está muito quente e não consegui vender nenhum ainda”, conta.
Ele se ajoelha na calçada, coloca um bolo de panos de prato na frente e começa a pensar e rezar em voz alta, quase chorando. “Meu Deus, me ajuda, me ajuda… Hoje não vendi nenhum pano e eu preciso do dinheiro…” Rafaela se levanta, explica que costuma parar o trabalho para orar. Então ela diz: “Boa sorte aí para vocês com a matéria e reportagem”. E vai embora para outro semáforo.
Morar em uma região rica com uma renda baixa é tarefa difícil. Os moradores contam que precisam se deslocar para bairros mais pobres, como Jardim Amazona, Pedro Raimundo , Santa Luzia e Dom Avelar para fazer compras em supermercados, onde o preço é mais acessível.
“O custo de vida em Petrolina é caríssimo”, diz Ana Cecília Gomes, 35, entregadora em um delivery de pizza. “Nós ficamos porque somos batalhadores, e essa cidade é nossa também, mesmo que muita gente não queira.”
