Definição
Existem vários índices que buscam definir o que seria uma pessoa que vive em situação de pobreza ou pobreza extrema.
Segundo a Organização das Nações Unidas para Agricultura e Alimentação (FAO) uma pessoa pobre é aquela que não tem dinheiro para garantir uma refeição que forneça 1750 calorias por dia.
Para a Comissão Econômica para a América Latina e o Caribe (CEPAL), o índice é um pouco maior. Para esta agência regional, o limite seria uma dieta de 2200 calorias diárias.
Para a ONU, uma pessoa pobre é que tem uma renda equivalente a US$ 1,25 por dia ou cerca de dois reais.
Para a União Europeia, uma pessoa pode ser considerada pobre quando ganha 60% da renda média do país. Na Dinamarca seria quem possui uma renda igual ou inferior a 2.500,00 reais.
Causas da pobreza
Por conta do processo colonizador e da escravidão, o território brasileiro sempre foi um país onde havia muitas pessoas pobres. Com o fim da escravidão e o êxodo rural, as cidades não tinham infraestrutura para a chegada de mais gente. Assim, o fenômeno da pobreza se acentuou.
No entanto, a partir dos anos 90 do século XX, com a estabilidade econômica, a renda per capita dos brasileiros foi aumentando gradativamente.
A pobreza do Brasil também revela as disparidades regionais devido aos anos de concentração da política e das indústrias no sul do país. Os estados do norte e nordeste têm os maiores índices de pobreza, e Maranhão, Piauí e Alagoas são aqueles que possuem a maior proporção de pobres.

No Brasil, o Ministério do Desenvolvimento Social definiu que a linha de pobreza no Brasil é quem vive com uma renda de até 140 reais por mês. Mais de 28 milhões de brasileiros estão nessa condição.
Com o advento do governo Lula e seus programas de transferência de renda, a pobreza no país recuou.
No entanto, com a crise econômica, o cenário pode mudar. Dados do Banco Mundial indicam que o Brasil terá um aumento de 3,6 milhões de pobres até o fim de 2017.
Igualmente, o perfil do pobre no país se transformou. Agora, são brasileiros com menos de 40 anos, chefes de família e que há dois anos estavam empregados. Possuem pelo menos o ensino médio e 90% vive na cidade.
Pobreza extrema
Já os que vivem em pobreza extrema são aqueles que vivem com 70 reais por mês.
No Brasil, 8% da população ou um pouco mais de 16 milhões são considerados extremamente pobres. Mais da metade dos extremamente pobres vive no Nordeste e das 50 cidades mais pobres do Brasil, 26 estão no Maranhão.
